How To Make The Change From Student To Professional

How To Make The Change From Student To Professional Facebook3TweetLinkedInPinEmailShares3 Making the transition from the classroom to the workplace can be tricky, especially if its your first job! You need to make sure you are fully prepared and adapted to your new environment during these initial stages. Here are some top tips to help you make a smooth transition from the classroom to the workplace. Be open to change This goes without saying, that working full time is quite different to being in full-time education. You need to open yourself up to change you be welcoming to the fact you will be working with different people. Your environment will change, especially if your role is situated in an office. The structure of your day will also change and you will usually work within standard office hours. But one of the biggest changes will be the new responsibilities to which you will take on within your role. Adapt to your new schedule A difficult change you may experience leaving your student lifestyle behind. Stereotypically  students have the freedom to complete deadlines in their own time and not necessarily during university time. Which can sometimes result in an all-night session in the library the night before. However, with work, this just isnt the norm. You will need to complete tasks under the office working hours and avoid being awake into the small hours of the night! To stick to this schedule, attempt early nights and adjust your sleep pattern to your new weekday schedule. Once you are used to it, you will wake up full of energy ready to take on the day! Although this may seem obvious, making this change will make you more alert and focused at work. Get to know your new colleagues At university or college, you spend the majority  of your time with people your age or with people who have similar interests. This just isnt always the case in a work environment. You will meet people from all walks of life, so its a great time to get to know them and be open to socialising with new people.  Ask your new co-workers about their role and how long theyve worked at the company. This will provide you  with a greater understanding of who everyone is and their job roles within the company. Utilise your spare time You can use your own time to develop skills that you think will help you excel within the role. Responsibility Adjusting to your new-found responsibility is important to prove you are capable of taking on the new role. This can sometimes be a difficult transition, especially if it is your first professional job since graduating. It is worth remembering that although you might not have as much experience as your co-workers, you were hired for a reason. The hiring manager believed you were the best fit for the role and the company. Keep your behaviour professional This key transition can sometimes be difficult. If you are used to acting a certain way with friends it may take time,  to adjust to your new environment. Particularly during your first couple of weeks! Show you are professional
